Hurricane Ike has passed, leaving some folk relieved, but many more facing the terrible impact of the damage and the challenge of where to start first to pick up the pieces of their lives. Depending on the extent of the individual loss, emotional reactions will vary, but all will experience at least some degree of pain.

The whole world sympathizes as they watch the devastation of the hurricanes and other natural disasters destroying the lives of so many. News travels at jet speed as it is relayed through the internet via the new social media networks such as twitter.

I am not sure if you believe in Divine Intervention or not, but there are some things that happen to us in life that I cannot explain any other way. Here’s one of my experiences.

My mother was a motor mechanic during the second world war, During this time all of the working age women had to fill the vacancies in the work force left by the men who had been drafted for the war. The options that my mother had were to work in a hospital which she could not face, or in an auto garage which was more attractive to her. So she became a very good mechanic.

Yesterday I shared some of my experiences with threats of stolen identity. This is a very real problem in today’s world with so much ease of communication, and especially with the automated kind.

But there is another way our identity can be stolen, one which perhaps we are not as away of.

Not too long ago, I went into my local bank to make a deposit. As usual, I did not have my account number with me, and gave the teller my SSN so they could find my account.

The teller did the search on the computer and then asked: Is this Jill or Maria? What? Maria? I don’t know a Maria. But she had an account open in MY bank with MY SSN! I had to go and get a letter from the SSN department to prove I am me :) and then take it back to the bank and of course the other account was promptly closed. Most likely my SSN was sold to an illegal alien. Phewl.
