Chicken legs for dinnerHere is an objection concerning the teachings of Personal Development that you may well have used along your life’s journey.

Doesn’t this teaching contain a lot of humanistic principles that are derived from false religions?

This indeed was one of my biggest objections to any teaching that was not OPENLY Christ centered teaching. In other words, there was a time in my life that if a motivational or inspirational book or tape was not written for Christians (and by Christians), I usually would not look at it. Been there – done that? Perhaps you have, perhaps not.

If you have read my profile you will know that I spent 25 years in Mexico teaching in many different situations. During this time I spent 1 full year teaching a group of 6 folk every day. We dealt with subjects that included leadership, relationships, teaching children, bible studies etc.

One of the first subjects I taught was “How To Study”. At the end of this course, one of my students who had three different college diplomas confessed to me that despite all of his degrees, the lessons I presented taught him how to study.

Warrior Training CompetitionWhen I first came in touch with the teachings known as “self-development”, I pushed them aside labeling them “self-centered” and even “humanistic”. You may have done that too.

Recently I have come back to this topic and noted that many men and women who’s lives are Christ centered are following the motivational teachings know as “Self Development”. I believe it was Jim Rohn who “invented” this title.

So today let’s take a look at one of the biggest objections to Self Development for Christians. (in future articles we will look at more objections).

Roaring Lion by Tambako the JaguarHowever, to all who received him, to those believing in his name, he gave authority (power, right) to become God’s (adult, mature, fully developed) children, John 1:12.

Just this morning I was reading a message from Dr Mike Murdock about the Lion. The Lion is BY NATURE a the king of the jungle. Yet they are not born with the developed skills to operate as the king of the jungle.

They have to LEARN these skills. They have to WORK at it and it takes them at least 2 years to fully develop as the king of the jungle they were born to be.

When you accepted Christ into your life, you were given the right (authority and power) to become an adult son (or daughter) of God with ALL of the rights. (Look at the verse John 1:12 quoted at the beginning of this article).
