Hard at work Olympic TrainingThe 4th key that Olympic Gold Medalist, Gail Devers mentioned as one of the keys to the success she enjoyed in her sport was “hard work”.

I know that in many circles today hard work is not a very popular key to success. Indeed it may not be a very exciting key, but nevertheless it is a VERY essential one.

Gail Devers was the winner of 2 gold medals in the 2004 event despite excruciating pain from a thyroid problem.

In one of her interviews with the press, Gail attributes her success to 6 keys.

We have already considered three of these keys:
1. Keep Your Dream Alive
2. Believe In Yourself
3. Your Vision

And then Gail mentioned Key No 4: HARD WORK.

Olympic Gold MedalGail Dever is an Olympic Gold Medalist who won two gold medals in the 100 in the summer of 2004. However the hurdles were her strongest event, and she was intent on winning another gold in this event.

Her battle with a thyroid problem overtook her during this event and she was taken to hospital with her hopes shattered.

Many of us would consider this a defeat and we may even call this situation an experience shattered hopes. But not Gail. Instead of allowing disappointment and discouragement to overtake her, this is what she said:

Gail made a statement that is now being recorded under the heading “famous quotes” where she reveals 6 keys that she attributes to her success as an Olympic Champion. It is always good to learn from those who have already achieved the success that we are pursuing in our lives.

Gail Devers achieved much despite her battle with a serious thyroid condition that hindered her performance. She clearly has a strong faith in God.

After being taken off of the track in agonizing pain, she was still able to make the following comment from the medical room where she had been taken:

The lesson I learned is you have to be tough, you set a goal and you keep that dream alive. (Reported by New York Times journalist Liz Robbins, Summer 2004).

Sir Edmund Hillary and his wife I am sure that you know who Sir Edmund Hillary was. He was a great explorer and also the first man to climb Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world.

Sir Edmund Hillary was from Auckland, New Zealand :)

Sir Edmund was a great man with great achievements.

But he did not achieve his success at the first attempt. Success did not come easily.

It took persistence, determination and discipline to achieve his successes.
