God’s Purpose or My Purpose?

iamfree Gods Purpose or My Purpose?

A question I found on a recent post on this blog Christians and the Prosperity Gospel reads as follows:

Do you not think the bible talks more about God’s will and purpose rather than ‘your purpose’? (This is a portion of the comment – in the next post I will answer the rest of this comment).

To respond to this question, the first thing we need to understand is that there is no real separation between God’s purpose and your true purpose in life. Your purpose is a part of His

You were born with the seed of destiny in your heart.

This seed of destiny is your purpose in life. God put this seed in the heart of every man and woman. You can of course choose to follow this purpose or go your own way.

God gave us a free will because He is seeking sons and daughters, not puppets. This is His first and foremost purpose for our lives. To be His son or daughter.

  • Fellowship with a puppet (which has no will of its own) is no joy.
  • Fellowship with a son or daughter who CHOOSES to want to be with you and do things with you because he or she likes to be with you IS a joy right?

We were born with a God sized space in our hearts that can only be filled by Him and He wants to fill it and have fellowship with us. Adam experienced this fellowship with God in the garden before he and Eve fell into sin. Jesus came as the “second Adam” (1 Corinthians 15:45) to restore mankind to this place that was lost.

Because man still has (and will always have) the freedom to choose, some still choose to go their own way (and experience death and separation from God) while others choose life and fellowship with God in Christ.

God’s plans for us are good plans. Jeremiah reveals this in chapter 15:11

The LORD said, "Have I not set you free for a good purpose? Have I not intervened for you with your enemies in times of trouble and times of distress?

and in chapter 29:19

For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for well-being, and not for calamity, in order to give you a future and a hope.

Remember Jesus said that He came not to destroy the law and the prophets (the teachings of the Old Testament) but to fulfill them

"Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I didn’t come to destroy them, but to fulfill them, ..” Matthew 5:17

Then He also said:

The thief comes only to steal, slaughter, and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly. John 10:10

If you study the words plans and purposes in the Bible you will discover that God was and is certainly against the plans of the wicked. Those are the folk who are going against even their own hearts and in so doing have hardened their hearts.

At the same time, God is for the plans of the righteous because they are walking according to the seed of purpose that He placed in their hearts.

The plans of the righteous are just, but the advice of the wicked is deceitful. Proverbs 12:5.

Note: Some translations use the word “thoughts” while others use the word “plans” here and in other verses. The actual Hebrew word used in the original means: intentions, plans, thoughts or purpose.

So the real answer to the comment: “The Bible talks about God’s will more than our purpose in life” is “there is no difference”. If you are really following that call of your heart as you walk in fellowship with Him, you are fulfilling your part of His great plan.

It is not just ministers and missionaries who have a “calling” in life.

Everyone has a calling!

In the process, you get to enjoy this life (the abundant life).

Today’s Challenge: Are you following and fulfilling your calling in this life?

Are you really living the abundant life that Jesus came to give you?
